And why this felt like a good idea!
At some point—probably over coffee, possibly over a map, definitely without thinking it through—two friends realised they shared three things in common:
- a thirst for life,
- a genuine curiosity about how other people live,
- and an alarming tolerance for shenanigans!
Tiny Town Tours was born out of a simple question: what actually happens in the places most of us only slow down for? The towns with one dairy, a memorial clock, and a story that starts with “Well, back in ’82…”.
We’re doing this because:
- Big destinations are already covered. Relentlessly.
- Small towns are where the good stories hide.
- Discovery doesn’t require a passport—just a willingness to turn off the highway.
- And frankly, someone needs to be documenting New Zealand’s public toilets before time (or “Council Upgrades”) erases them forever.
But this isn’t just a private adventure. We’re bringing as many people along for the ride as possible—locals, passers‑by, armchair travellers, and anyone who’s ever wondered whether it’s worth stopping in a town with fewer than 300 people and no apparent reason for existing.
We’ll share the moments that are funny, strange, quietly brilliant, and occasionally confusing. We’ll listen more than we talk (most of the time). And we’ll treat every place with respect—even when the best shop is also the post office, bait freezer, and informal community noticeboard.
This is about curiosity, connection, and giving small places the attention they rarely ask for—but often deserve.
Also, we really enjoy a good antique shop and an excellent loo.
